SEL 1540 'Standard'

c1960

The SEL Standard is basically the single cylinder version of the Major. This is the third in size of their range of four stationary engines. Like the Major, the Standard is a neat, compact design and well made. Most of the comments for the Major also apply to the Standard.

The steam feed from the top of the boiler has an in-line lubricator just before the single action oscillating cylinder. The main dimensions are: base - 4 3/4" square, boiler - 4" x 1 1/2" diam, cylinders - 3/16" x 3/8" stroke, flywheel 1 3/4" diam.

The example of this engine in my collection has the less common red base. It is in as-found condition, with the gold paint on the brasswork and the red paint on the flywheel in poor condition. It also has a repair to the safety valve bush. Because of it's relative rarity, I have left this one as it is.

The drawing on the bottom left is taken from a 1950s SEL catalogue.
