Wilesco D4 (1950)

Early 1950s

This is one of Wilesco's earliest models. This model was discontinued long ago and, confusingly, the designation D4 has been reused for a similarly sized but otherwise completely different engine (see here).

The burner is missing from my example but I assume it should be an Esbit tablet burner, but of an earlier style from the ones in later models. The boiler is a simple horizontal one with just a safety valve and steam outlet. It is 45mm diam x 94mm long. There is no whistle and no water level indication. The chimney is purely cosmetic.

The steam pipe is fed directly to the back of the cylinder port face, with no control or lubrication. The cylinder is single acting oscillating type; 7mm bore x 20mm stroke. Exhaust exits from the back of the port face into the atmosphere. The crankshaft has a simple crank at one end, an 11mm diameter pulley at the other end and a 68mm diameter spoked flywheel in the middle.

As a whole, the engine is in reasonably good condition. The grey crinkle paintwork on the base is in good condition. There is a small amount of rust on the firebox but not enough to justify repainting. There's some paint loss in the condensate tray but elsewhere it is good. The burner is missing and it will be difficult to find an original replacement.
