Crescent (CK) #3

1930s?

This is the largest of the three simple steam engines made by CK and imported under the Crescent brand.

The galvanised steel meths burner has three wicks and a handle, which doubles, potentially dangerously, as a filler and vent. The boiler - 53mm diameter x 124mm long - has a safety valve, steam dome and whistle, although the latter is missing on this example. The hole has been plugged by a screw. The steam pipe feeds from the dome to the engine frame, which is a thin brass bar riveted to the side of the firebox.

The single cylinder is a basic single acting oscillating type, 11mm bore x 23mm stroke. The crankshaft penetrates through the firebox and has a 55mm diameter mazac flywheel on the other end. The flywheel incorporates a 18mm pulley and also has a groove in the outer rim.

As acquired, the flywheel was missing but a replacement has been found. The whistle is still missing.
