Bing 130/812

This is a simple model, by Bing standards, with a vertical boiler, single acting oscillating cylinder and twin wick meths burner.

The engine is quite small, the height being 245mm with a 90mm square base. The boiler is 50mm diameter x 75mm. The cylinder is 6mm diameter x 14mm stroke. The chimney is totally cosmetic as neither the exhaust nor the burner fumes use it. There are a safety valve and a lever operated whistle on top of the boiler. The 45mm diameter flywheel is cast in what might be lead.

When I acquired the engine, it was in pretty poor condition. The piston was jammed solid in the cylinder and had to be soaked in vinegar to free it. The steam pipe had broken free at the cylinder end and had to be resoldered. The steelwork was rusty and the paint was in pretty poor condition so I had to guess at the colours when I restored it. It appeared to be all black when I got it but there was evidence of a dark red under the black on the base. Neither, of course, was necessarily original. Despite it's condition, the whole thing was surprisingly complete, including the burner and even the wooden knob on the whistle lever (though I can't guarantee that everything is original).

Overall, a charming "cheap and cheerful" little engine. It runs well but, being light weight and totally unbalanced, it tends to walk around the table quite rapidly when it gets going! There are four holes in the base, obviously intended to screw the thing down if used frequently.
