Mastrand Traction Engine

c1950s

This is the quite rare Mastrand traction engine. The road roller version is quite common but not the TE, for some reason. This example had been much modified by a previous owner. It had been modified using Meccano rear wheels driven by Meccano gears. It also had stearing gear (see last photo on the left). Fortunately, the original parts, or most of them, were retaind and were included, so I have restored it to it's original configuration.

The boiler is about 5" long x 1 1/4" diameter, located inside an outer casing, 1 5/8" diameter. The original meths burner is missing but I have acquired a new replica.

Steam is fed directly to the top of the port face block of a single acting oscillating cylinder. The cylinder is 13/32" bore x 11/16" stroke. The crankshaft has a small disk crank at one end and a 1 7/8" diameter mazac flywheel at the other. The flywheel incorporates an 11/32" pulley, which drives the near side wheel through a spring type drive band. The wheel is 3" diameter. The front wheels are 1 3/4" diameter.

The paintwork appears to be original and mostly in fair condition. The steel firebox is slightly rusty but not seriously enough to justify repainting. The original meths burner is missing but I have acquired a new replica. The safety valve was beyond repair so I had a replica made.
