Bing 130/442

This is a fairly simple engine, by Bing standards. It is a basic horizontal engine with an oscillating cylinder.

The boiler is a horizontal pot boiler, 45mm diameter x 105mm long. It has a dummy chimney, safety valve, whistle and steam connection (no dome). There is no water level indication.

The steam feed goes directly to the back of the port face. The cylinder is a single acting oscillating cylinder, 7mm bore x 15mm stroke. The piston rod is connected to a simple bent wire type crank. The crankshaft is fitted with a 64mm diameter flywheel which incorporates a 9mm diameter pulley.

As acquired, the whole engine was in pretty poor condition, cosmetically (see photo bottom left). The brasswork was heavily tarnished. The firebox and base were very rusty. The chimney fitted was definitely not original. The flywheel was wobbling badly but that was just due to a slight bend in the crankshaft, which was soon fixed. The whistle looks like it has had a push at some time which has dented the boiler where it screws in. I have improved this slightly but it's still dented. The whistle was unusable and I have replaced it with a working one. The burner was missing but I have found one which is, I think, at least approximately correct. I have repainted all the steel parts and cleaned most of the dirt from the brass. It still needs a chimney.
