This model was made at the time when Bing were trying to copy the style of Bowman in the UK.
The boiler is 51mm diameter x 127mm long. It is fired with a 2 wick meths burner. It has a whistle and safety valve on top. Strangely, it has both a U form sight glass and an overflow plug on the end.
Steam is fed directly to the back of a Bowman style engine assembly. The single acting oscillating cylinder is hidden inside an outer casing, similar to some Bowman models. The cylinder is approx. 8mm bore x 22mm stroke. There is a small oiling point on the top of the outer casing, positioned to drip oil into the front of the cylinder or onto the piston rod.
The crankshaft has a Bowman style crank at one end and a 10mm diameter pulley on the other. In the centre is a 55mm diameter flywheel and a 13mm diameter gear, which meshes with a 48mm diameter gear, which incorporates a 10mm diameter pulley. The gears are protected by a brass shield; unlike Bowman models and possibly dictated by German safety laws. The whole engine assembly is supported by a sturdy 3.5mm thick steel frame, similar to that on Bowman models.
As acquired, the condition was generally good but did require a bit of TLC. The crankshaft had considerable end play so that either the crank fouled the frame or the gears failed to mesh. Fixing this was is just a matter of inserting washers and adjusting the positioning of the parts. The flywheel has lost some of it's chrome plating, but that's of little importance. The paintwork appears to be original with the exception of the burner, which has been painted by the previous owner, who also replaced the handle.
Further repairs needed for steaming were replacement of the sight glass seals and replacing the burner filler cork with a metal plug. On first firing, the burner got rather hot and flared up (destroying the cork in the process). I think it was probably, originally, unpainted and the black paint may not have been a good idea. I might have to remove it; maybe replace it with clear VHT lacquer. In the mean time, it works fine using meths diluted with 10% water. The safety valve it came with was incorrect and I have replaced it with a weighted one, which is more like the original.
