Another of Ben Peake's exquisite miniature engines. Unusual in that the flywheel is on a separate shaft, geared to the crankshaft, which reverses the direction of rotation but does not change the speed (unlike the Sun & Planet gear on the No. 3). It is a limited edition of 51 and this is serial number 44.
The vertical cylinder is part of the main supporting pillar. It is 8mm bore x 13mm stroke. The crosshead runs in a trunk guide at the top of the pillar, with two connecting rods oriented downwards to the crankshaft underneath the cylinder. The rotary valve is an integral part of the crankshaft. One end of the crankshaft is fitted with a small gear wheel which meshes with an identical wheel below it on the final shaft. On the opposite end of this shaft is the 50mm diameter flywheel and a small pulley shaped to take a flat belt.
The base of the pillar is fixed to a wooden base, with a circular ID plate containing the serial number (44/51).
